【From Stanford University】Four characteristics of successful people (more important than talent)

Thank you for reading my blog.

I am sure many of you are thinking like this.

“I can’t seem to achieve my goals.”

“I want to be successful, but I can’t do it.”

“I want to know what the difference is between those who can achieve something and those who can’t.”

You only live once and you want to achieve what you want to do and your goals anyway.

In fact, research has shown that anyone can succeed and achieve their goals.

So, in this issue, I would like to share with you the content of four characteristics of successful people (more important than talent).

This content is based on the results of a study conducted by Stanford University.

So let’s check out the characteristics of successful people that anyone can imitate.

Four characteristics of successful people

Stanford University psychologist Catharine Cox studied the characteristics of accomplished people to identify how they differed from the general population.

The results revealed the following four characteristics of accomplished people.

  1. He strives with distant goals in mind.
  2. They do not stop working on a whim once they have set their sights on a goal.
  3. Once they set a goal, they vow to stick to it.
  4. Even when they run into obstacles, they never give up.

He strives with distant goals in mind.

This attitude is the opposite of living for the day.

Successful people are those who are not negligent in preparing for their later years and are working daily toward a clear goal.

They do not stop working on a whim once they have set their sights on a goal.

Don’t jump into something new for the novelty of it.

Don’t start something new because you are bored or because you think it looks better that way.

You have more important and clear goals.

Once they set a goal, they vow to stick to it.

You must have the willpower to achieve your goals.

Even when they run into obstacles, they never give up.

Even if difficulties arise in achieving the goal, do not give up because of them, but persevere and move toward the goal with persistence and perseverance.

To summarize the above four characteristics, the important thing is “persistence of motivation”.

It is about persistence and continuing to work toward one’s goals.

If you ask me, this may sound obvious.

However, I wonder if you have noticed.

The words “IQ” and “talent” do not appear even once in these four words.

It is not about natural talent, but about dedication and commitment to long-term goals.

Cox summarizes the study by concluding

People who work hard with maximum persistence, even though their level of intelligence is not the highest, achieve much greater accomplishments than those who work less persistently, even though their level of intelligence is the highest.

So where does this tenacity come from?

Let’s review the underlying concepts in the next part.

The foundational concepts for success

The foundation for success is a “growth mindset”.

A “growth mindset” is

The “growth mindset” is the mindset that one’s basic human qualities can be developed through hard work.

In a nutshell, it is a mindset that says, “If you do it, you can do it!” mindset.

This mindset is shared by successful people, as revealed by the research of Carol S. Dweck, a professor of psychology at Stanford University.

So, taking into account the research of both Katherine Cox and Carol S. Dweck,

having the basic idea of a growth mindset, setting firm long-term goals, and persevering toward those goals are the characteristics of successful people and what we need to do to be successful.

This means that inborn things like talent and intelligence are not very important.

To be successful, all you need are the following three things that anyone can learn now.

  1. Growth Mindset
  2. Long-term goals
  3. Persistent Action

Be sure to keep these three sets in mind.

–Postscript–

In this issue, we told you about the traits that successful people have in common.

It was important to have a growth mindset, set long-term goals, and be persistent.

And these were more important than talent or IQ.

Don’t think you can’t do it anymore.

There is no need to feel down on yourself against a successful person because that person is a genius, and you don’t need to have an easy thought that escapes from reality until today.

Let me end with a quote from Nietzsche.

Don’t put me away as a natural gift, a natural talent!

For even those who are not gifted become great masters. They have achieved greatness through hard work and have become (what the world calls) geniuses.

They all acquire the skill to assemble each part accurately with the seriousness of a skilled craftsman. Then they finally take the plunge and create something spectacular.

The reason why they take their time in the earlier stages is because they take more pleasure in careful work without neglecting the details than in the moment of glorious completion.

Thank you again for reading to the end of this article.

See you in my next post!
